Social entrepreneurship involves identifying and implementing innovative solutions to social problems using market-based approaches (Dees, 1998). Unlike traditional entrepreneurs, whose primary goal is profit maximization, social entrepreneurs strive to balance financial sustainability with the creation of social value (Mair & Martí, 2006). This dual mission demands a broad competence profile that integrates entrepreneurial acumen with a deep understanding of social impact (Sassmannshausen & Volkmann, 2018).
The ADVANCE project - designed to enhance postgraduate education in social innovation and entrepreneurship in East Africa - necessitates a thorough assessment of the competencies required for social entrepreneurs operating in diverse and dynamic socio-economic environments. The Competence Profile outlines the core competencies crucial for social entrepreneurs, drawing on contemporary academic literature and best practices in the field.
