Social entrepreneurship involves identifying and implementing innovative solutions to social problems using market-based approaches (Dees, 1998). Unlike traditional entrepreneurs, whose primary goal is profit maximization, social entrepreneurs strive to balance financial sustainability with the creation of social value (Mair & Martí, 2006). This dual mission demands a broad competence profile that integrates entrepreneurial acumen with a deep understanding of social impact (Sassmannshausen & Volkmann, 2018).
The ADVANCE project - designed to enhance postgraduate education in social innovation and entrepreneurship in East Africa - necessitates a thorough assessment of the competencies required for social entrepreneurs operating in diverse and dynamic socio-economic environments.
The Competence Profile defines the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that social entrepreneurs in Uganda and Tanzania need to establish, grow, and scale ventures that address pressing social and environmental challenges. It serves as an evidence-based, context-specific framework developed through extensive research, benchmarking, and consultations with more than 200 stakeholders across the region.
“This Competence Profile is not just an academic output, it is a strategic resource for strengthening higher education, building institutional capacity, and shaping policy frameworks that will empower the next generation of East African social entrepreneurs” said Joyce Eunice Akello, Executive Director of FAPAD, speaking on behalf of the ADVANCE consortium.
By fostering inclusive innovation and building institutional capacity, the initiative is expected to strengthen livelihoods and accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.
